I drove it during the recession ,and it quite literally kept me from being constantly broke. I've learned to instinctively turn off the air conditioning button when I need a quick burst of speed. I bought it with over 200,000 miles on it and proceeded to add over another 130,000 miles before it finally gave out on me, and that's because I didn't actually spend any money taking care of it. I love how light it is - that contributes to it being very peppy around town and on the highway too. But it's perfect for commuting and driving around town.
Please verify any information in question with a sales representative. A friend of mine is driving one that has over 250k miles on it and it is still running strong. The stereo is pretty great for a factory setup too. If I had to replace it today, I just don't know what could compare. We were passing a dump truck legally, and another car pulled into our lane. And it gets blown around a bit by the semis on the interstate. Oh yeah, I'd buy her again. I found an '02 6 months ago and love it, so far. Maintenance is minimal and easy. Low price, great fuel efficiency. But it is a decent car it will get you from point a to point b, is very good on gas and is pretty reliable overall. Could dip in and out of curves really well—better than expected from a car that style. I used and abused this car, but it just kept being reliable.
The view from the driver's seat is a bit higher than other cars, so it's nice to be able to see above some of the smaller vehicles on the road. Mileage has ranged from 32 - 43 mpg but is typically right around 34 in mixed driving. The Scion xB up to 2006 has good headroom also, but used ones are more expensive, and the Echo's mileage is 15-20% better. Interior is extremely Spartan and the only real amenity is air conditioning, which doesn't work effectively when the weather is unusually hot. Never had a major problem except for this year. A great little handler on winding coastal roads, a road-gripping trooper in the ice and snow, a champ on long long road trips.
